The MSB Technology Center offers support services for a number of different hardware and software issues. Our contract with Computerware allows students to drop off their computers at the tech center for repair, and retrieve their fixed computer a few days later. We provide Bootcamp and Windows 8 installations for students with Mac computers, as well as installations for the iPrint software, Minitab, and the Decision Tools application. The tech center is also responsible for the maintenance of the printers in Hariri. If you are having any problems, stop by!

Computer Requirements

Every student in the business school is required to have a computer that can run the Windows operating system. For information on MSB recommended computers, visit our Computer Requirements page. At MSBTC, we exclusively support Windows Vista Business (or better) and Windows 7/8 Professional (or better) operating systems and the software we provide for it. MSBTC strongly recommends Windows 8 Professional. Windows XP (all versions) is no longer fully supported because it will not run MS Office 2010. While we may provide software support for Macs in certain cases, our expertise when troubleshooting is much more extensive for Windows-based systems.

The tech center now provides support for all Mac computers. Most new MacBook models will be supported, with the exception of the 128GB SSD MacBook Airs. These computers will not be able to run the software you will need as a student here. The older MacBook Pro models that we support are: 15-inch and 17-inch early-2008 models and later, and 13-inch mid-2009 models and later. To find out what model you have, visit and type in the serial number for your Mac. Serial numbers can be found by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left of your computer screen and going to About This Mac > More Info...

If you chose to purchase a Mac computer, you will be required to install Windows 7/8 on the computer as well. Some of the classes you will be taking require software that is only available for the Windows OS. The Tech Center offers two ways to install Windows on your Mac computer:

  • Bootcamp: This program comes free with most Mac computers. This program allows you to run either your Apple OS or your Windows OS at a time, without slowing your computer. The tech center offers support for the use of this application.

  • VMWare Fusion: This is a software offered for free by Georgetown to all Georgetown students. It allows you to run both your Apple OS and Windows OS at the same time, but it may slow down your computer. The tech center offers limited support for this software.
If you elect to install Windows OS on your Mac, the tech center can assist you. You will need a copy of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office for Windows. Both can be obtained from the University software purchasing system with a student discount, but we recommend getting it directly from the Microsoft web store, as it is often cheaper (we also recommend purchasing the software before you come to the tech center to have it installed). Be prepared to spend upwards of 3 hours in the tech center with your computer if you chose to undergo this process. You must be with your computer at all times. Business school students are allowed to use most of the printers in Hariri. These printers offer a variety of printing and copying options, including high-speed color. Permission to use certain printers vary between faculty, staff, and students depending on your access rights. iPrint printers will notify you during the installation process if you do not have the proper permissions to use certain printers.

As a part of every student's semesterly lab fee, printing services are included at the Tech Center. Each student receives 1000 pages of printing at the begining of the semester (double sided papers count as one print). Should a need for more printing arise, students can purchase additional pages at the Tech Center for $0.05/sheet.

To print from your computer, you must be connected to Saxanet, have the iPrint client installed, and use the MSB-issued print card distributed during orientation. If you lose your print card, a new one can be purchased at the Tech Center for $1. If you do not have your print card, you can also use the printers by signing in manually on the touch pad with your NetID and Novell password.

Equipment Loans

The tech center has a varity of equpiment on hand for rental, free of charge, to students, faculty, and staff. The breakdown of equipment rental permissions is as follows:

Organizations and clubs may also borrow projectors and video cameras upon request, but laptops can only be used if a faculty or staff member borrows one on your behalf.

Computerware can provide both warranty and vendor hardware repair services for most computer brands. Unless you bought your computer directly from Computerware, with a warranty, there is a fee for their repair services. A Computerware representative will be at MSBTC on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am - 2pm. If you would like to use Computerware's services, please fill out the online form before bringing in your computer.
