Tech Info for Graduating Students

Below are instructions on what to do and how to do it regarding retaining the information currently on your MSB Novell account and GroupWise e-mail after you graduate and your account is closed. If you do not understand any of it please contact the Tech Center.

The below information applies to students graduating with a Georgetown University diploma only. If you are leaving the university but will not be receiving a diploma (i.e. exchange students, etc.), please email msb-help@msb.edu for information about your accounts. In your email to msb-help@msb.edu, you must disclose information stating that you are not graduating from Georgetown.

Technology Disorientation Classes

Information for Disorientation Classes will be posted once available

Account Expiration

Access to your MSB Novell Account will terminate 30 days after graduation. After that no P: Drive, no S: Drive, no Lab Access, no Lexis Nexis, no Bloomberg.

Access to your MSB Groupwise email will terminate 6 months after graduation. If your email archive is on a shared drive (i.e. your P drive) be sure to move it prior to losing your MSB Novell Account, otherwise you will lose the archive, even though you will continue to have access to MSB Groupwise for five additional months.

Email

After graduation, you will want to set your lifetime alumni routing so that you may continue to use your @georgetown.edu address. Before you do that, there are several things that you should know.

First, setting the routing address does not automatically move your current messages anywhere. It will affect all messages sent to your @georgetown address from there on, but it is not retroactive.

Second, setting routing only affects messages sent from outside of the MSB.  Messages sent internally (that is, sent from GroupWise users to either internal, GroupWise mailing lists, or sent to you within GroupWise instead of your NetID@georgetown address) will continue to arrive in your GroupWise box and, if you have not either set up a forwarding rule or have some way of checking your mail, you will be unaware of these messages.

Third, and most important, is that you have six months with your GroupWise account after you graduate. We will send out notifications as the time to close your account draws near, but you should try to reduce your reliance on the account sooner rather than later.

New alumni should set their routing to go to an external, non-Georgetown account as soon as they can. You will need to go to this page: https://netid-mgmt.georgetown.edu/mailrouting/
You will be asked for a username and password. Enter your NetID as your username, and enter your NetID password (the one you use for Blackboard and Access+). After you enter this information, you will be taken to the mail delivery information page. Under “mail sent to” it should have your NetID. If the “goes to” column contains your msbmail account, this is where you will need to make a change to remove it. Click the change entry button. You will need to make sure that you are using an alternative account as your primary delivery location, and make sure that it is something other than your msbmail account.  Once you have done this, go to the bottom and click the submit changes button.

Gmail

For more information about checking and replying from multiple email addresses, read this Google Blog article.

Archived Email

If you have been archiving your GroupWise email, you will need a copy of the GroupWise client to read it, even after graduation. If you are not planning on keeping the client on your personal computer, you must unarchive all emails and print them out or forward them to another account. If your email archive is on a network drive (i.e. your P drive) be sure to move it prior to losing your MSB Novell Account, otherwise you will lose the archive.

Preserving Important Email

There are several options available for retaining messages after you graduate, but continuing to check your GroupWise box will not be one of them once your account is closed.

One of the methods of preserving your messages is to simply forward all of them from your GroupWise account to another account. This can be done by setting up a rule within GroupWise that will automatically forward all of the messages to another account. Information on setting this up can be found here: http://technology.msb.edu/highlights/gradinfo/forward_email.pdf

A more common and effective method is for users to set up another email program to check messages, and use this program to download them to the computer. You can find information about that on this page: http://technology.msb.edu/helptopics/email/email.htm

After you set up your account using one of the full programs, you should be able to save your messages on the hard drive using the program’s features.

P: Drive, S: Drive, W: Drive

Your P: Drive, W: Drive and S: Drive will be erased when your MSB Novell account is closed 30 days after graduation. You may copy the contents of any network drives to CD using the CD Burner(s) in the lab for free. We have blank CDs for sale in the Main lab for $1. Six computers in the MBA lab have a CD burner and all of the computers in the Main lab have CD burners. Alternatively, we will burn your P drive to CD for you for $5. We want the $5 in advance so you have to drop by the Main Lab and fill out a form. If you choose for us to make the CD, we will mail it with your data or you can pick it up in the lab.

Deconfiguring your Computer

After you graduate and your MSB accounts are closed you have the option to remove the MSB configuration from your computer. If you want to get the MSB Network programs removed, either read our Deconfiguration Guide (located at the bottom of the page) or drop by the Tech Center during walk-in hours. We will remove whatever you like.

The above information applies to students graduating with a Georgetown University diploma only. If you are leaving the university but will not be receiving a diploma (i.e. exchange students, etc.), please email msb-help@msb.edu for information about your accounts. In your email to msb-help@msb.edu, you must disclose information stating that you are not graduating from Georgetown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use Groupwise even though I am off campus or abroad?

Yes. Groupwise is designed so that if your computer is connected to the internet, it can access the mail servers at Georgetown and retreive your mail. Where ever you are, if you are able to surf the web from your computer, you may use Groupwise to check your email.

Why is the Novell Client so important to me gaining access?

The Novell Client is a software that distributes certain ablities and rights when you log into it using your username and password. This program communicates with many other servers and software to give you access to your various drives and the ablity to use MSB Network Applications. It is the backbone of the MSB Configuration.

Removing the MSB Network Configuration from your system

NOTE: If you feel uncomfortable removing these programs yourself, feel free to utilize the MSB Tech Center's help hours to remove your Configuration.

In order to use the guides to remove the MSB Network Configuration, check your computer's C:\ drive to see if a folder named "MSBConfig" exists. If it has been removed, tampered with, deleted, renamed or relocated, please bring you computer to Tech help hours to remove your configuration.

Removing the Configuration from a Windows 2000/XP/NT Machine

  1. Right Click on "My Network Places" select "Properties"
  2. Right Click on "Local Area Network", select "Properties".
  3. Highlight "Novell Client for Windows" under "This Connection uses the following items."
  4. Click "Uninstall."
  5. Click "Yes" when prompted to confirm removal of the client.

  5. Click "Yes" when prompted to confirm removal of the client.
  6. Reboot when prompted.

The Novell client is removed. If you wish, you may delete the MSB Network Applications shortcut on your screen by right clicking it and selecting "Delete".

To remove GroupWise, use the standard Add/Remove Program tool in your Windows Control Panel (Start >> Settings >> Control Panel). Prior to removing GroupWise, make sure you have taken steps to save your archived e-mail in a format other than GroupWise Archive. Select one of the other MSB Programs you would like to remove from the Add/Remove program tool. Click the "Add/Remove" button to begin uninstallation of the selected program. If you remove Norton Anti-Virus, we strongly encourage you to install another advanced anti-virus program.

Once you have done the above, erase the "MSBConfig" folder on your C: Drive (if present).
