Common Network Errors
We have seen a couple common problems this year and they have quick fixes. Here they are:
GroupWise Client "Unable to connect to TCP/IP address"
Translation - The client does not know where to look for your e-mail post office. You need to tell it where that post office is.
When the expanded GroupWise login screen comes up do the following:
- Click on the "Online" selection
- In the "server" address blank type "mail.msb.edu"
- In the "port" blank type "1678"
- Put in your user name (NetID) and your GroupWise password and it should work.

Novell Login "Unable to find Tree or Server"
Translation - Novell does not know where your login server is. You must type in the address.
When this happens do the following:
Log on to you Windows Desktop by clicking Workstation Only and typing in your Windows usernameand Windows password. For many of you this will be a username of " Admin ", "Administrator " or " MSBTC " and no password. (We need to fix that also, but not right now)
Once Windows has started and you are sure you are connected to the Internet:
- Click on "Start", "Programs", "Novell", "Novell Login"
- The Novell login window will appear just as when you start your computer.
- Type in your Username (NetID) and your Novell password.
- Click on "Advanced"
- Click on "Trees"
- After a short delay a white box will appear with "MSB" in it.
- Double click "Georgetown"
- The Tree should now be "MSB"
- Check to make sure the "Context" box directly below the Tree box says
U09.GSB.MAIN.GU (where 09 is your graduating year)
- Click "OK" and you should see the computer connect to the network.
If these solutions do not work, there may be a bigger problem. Make sure your network connection is working. If you are in the dorms, try your roommate's network jack, or swap cables.
If it still does not work, call the Tech Center (202-687-4721) or bring your computer by the Main Lab.
