Student Software

Students may feel free to use any word processing application they wish, but the MSBTC exclusively supports the Microsoft Office Suites. In addition to the standard MS Office package, students will be required to download several additional add-ons and applications for their classes. Much of this software is offered for free by Georgetown University.

MiniTab

MiniTab is a statistics software package typically used in students' OPIM 174 class. It is available for download for free through the MSB. For instructions on how to install MiniTab, visit our Tutorials page.

If you want to download MiniTab 18, the latest version, please click here  and use your UIS password.

If you want to download MiniTab 16 you must log on to NetStorage, the S: Drive, using your MSB Password.  Then go to S:/MSBTC/MSBTC Software/Minitab.

Decision Tools (@Risk)

The DecisionTools Suite is an integrated set of programs for risk analysis and decision making under uncertainty that runs in Microsoft Excel. The applications our students make the most use of are @RISK for Monte Carlo simulation and PrecisionTree for decision trees. Both of these applications integrate completely with Microsoft Excel for ease of use and maximum flexibility. For instructions on how to install the Decision Tools Suite, visit our Tutorials page.

JMP Statistical Discovery Software

JMP ("jump") is a statistical software developed by the JMP business unit of the SAS Institute. Georgetown business students use this software in their MBA classes. For instructions on how to download the JMP software, please visit our Tutorials page.

Zoom

Zoom is the Georgetown solution to video-teleconferencing. It is free to students, faculty and staff and far more capable than other free options like Skype. Student accounts may connect one-on-one for unlimited times but sessions of up to 25 participants are limited to 45 minutes. On-line instruction is available but we feel you will find the product easy to use.

EViews 9 Student Version Lite

EViews 9 Student Version Lite is a brand new product available as a free download for students to use the power of EViews to complete their course work. The Student Version Lite has same analytical methods used in EViews 9, however there are some feature limitations.






Enterprise Software

The MSB Technology Center provides and offers support for a variety of software packages available for MSB faculty and staff.

Banner

Banner is a sotware application that maintains student, alumni, financial and personnel data for higher education institutions. To access Banner:

  1. File a Banner account request form for the user. You will need a Georgetown NetID and password to login.
  2. Your computer must meet the following requirements:
    • Cisco AnyConnent VPN Client installed and connected, and have the most recent version of the Java application installed.
    • Any updated browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) with the most recent version of Java enabled.

If you are unsure if your computer meets these requirements, contact the technology center.

Cognos

Cognos is an application used for primarily business intelligence and perfomance management analytics. If you would like to gain access to Cognos, your computer must meet the following requirements:

  • Cisco AnyConnect VPN client and the most recent version of Java must be installed.
  • Any updated browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) with the most recent version of Java enabled. Internet Explorer must be used if you will be running Cognos Reports.

If you own a Mac, you MUST install either a Windows partition via Bootcamp or a VMWare virtual machine capable of running the Windows 7 operating system. Cognos cannot be run by the Mac OS.

Data Services

MSB supports a wide variety of database services.  Many are licensed and accessed directly from MSB account.  Others are managed by Lauinger Library and are accessed through them.  For a full list of Lauinger Library database services go to the Lauinger Library web site.

There are various conditions and procedures to access MSB database services.  They vary depending on what service is required and user status as student, faculty or staff.

MSB database resources are for academic use only. Academic use is defined as use by student, faculty, or staff members of the McDonough School of Business as a part of the Georgetown curriculum or Georgetown faculty research. Access is routinely extended on a case-by-case basis to all Georgetown faculty if the academic use criteria is met and the additional use will not impact MSB use.

Application for access to all MSB data resources is through the MSB Technology Center via e-mail to msbhelp@georgetown.edu. The process is informal. Please call 202-687-4721 with questions.

Bloomberg

Bloomberg Financial Consoles are provided in several locations in the business school for students and faculty to research current and historical financial data for either personal use or for any projects that may require this kind of information. If you need assistance with this service, please consult the helpdesk or your professor for specific instructions.

Bloomberg Professional services provide a flexible platform for financial professionals who need real-time data, news and analytics.

Access: Bloomberg data services are open to all MSB users from any of the Bloomberg terminals located in the Hariri Building, as well as the terminal in Lauinger Library. BoardEx

BoardEx services include biographical information and relationship analysis on the world’s top business leaders. Collectively these individuals have identifiable and measurable connections through over 150 million current and historical organizational overlaps. A robust analytical framework is applied to this data allowing you to quantify both the strength and characteristics of your relationship capital with regard to any business objective or target initiative. The analysis provides both a narrow view of relationship capital for tactical use as well as a company-wide view to support strategy and overall client management.

Capital IQ Excel Plugin

Equity capital structure data is available on the S&P Capital IQ platform for over 80,000 public and private companies worldwide with over 20 distinct class level data items, including security type, par value, par value currency, shares outstanding, authorized shares, voting rights and convertibility. Distinct data points are sourced from press releases, company websites, global stock exchanges, direct feeds from SEC, SEDAR, ASX and RNS.

Georgetown Google Apps

In August 2012, the McDonough school of business transitioned away from its own individual google apps domain and joined the other colleges in adopting a new, university-wide domain. Georgetown students now have access of all of the applications Google provides including Mail, Calendars, and Google Drive.
