About Computing ServicesMcDonough School of Business (MSB) students have access to a wide variety of computing resources. The University supports several local area networks and mini-computers optimized for specific requirements and an IBM mainframe computer for central data requirements. These resources are connected by the "GU-Net" which also provides connectivity to the extensive system of higher education data networks through the Internet. MSB Technology Center maintains the MSB-Net local area network, the Boland Information Systems Laboratory, Decision Support Center, and the MBA Lounge computer centers. These PC-based computer centers are for the routine use of MSB students, both MBA and undergraduate, faculty and staff. The Technology Center permanent staff is augmented by student employees, permitting extended hours of operation (listed on front page) including weekends. All machines are networked and can be used to access the numerous Georgetown University databases or the full services of the Internet using any of several WWW Browsers, Telnet, and other specific network client programs. Color and high resolution black and white laser printing is available. Scanners are also available. The MSB Technology Center provides access to a very wide range of primarily Windows NT-based applications programs. Several versions of mainstream word processing, spreadsheet, graphics/presentation and database applications are available. Additional resources include the Dow Jones News Retrieval, Lexis/Nexis and Bloomberg Financial Systems access. Each student is provided with a personal electronic mailbox, Internet mail account and network data storage. Using an IBM compatible computer equipped with an Ethernet 10baseT network interface device, these accounts are accessible from any station across the campus, including all undergrad dorms, classrooms, and the MBA Lounge. There are additionally several options for connecting to the MSB-Net via modem. The School of Business is a leader at Georgetown in implementing computer technology and facilitating student access to the latest in automated data processing. MSB is quick to respond to suggestions on how to improve service. You can expect numerous upgrades to the current system as you progress through your curriculum. |
